San Francisco based artist, Karl Fjelstrom uses the traditional medium of oil paint in a modern way. His subjects are rendered in a hyper real depiction so the focus is taken off the technique and placed solely on the image.

By using the traditional methods of oil paint on canvas, it allows Fjelstrom to blend and smooth out color transitions. His favorite tool is the ghetto 99 cent bristle brushes you can get at the hardware store. “Once you get all the annoying loose hairs out with multiple washes, it is perfect for blending colors to get a smooth depth-of-field effect often found in photography.

”I enjoy making images where the subject matter isn't so specific that everything is spelled out for you. They are mysterious, sensual, ambiguous and emotional. You must draw your own conclusion as to what is going on in the painting.”
